PPI describes how many pixels from the digital image are placed within each printed inch.

Proof before production: Upscaling increases pixel dimensions. It does not guarantee authentic detail, accurate color, or a print-ready result without review.
A printer does not evaluate an image only by the resolution number saved in its metadata. The image needs enough actual pixels for the requested physical size.
The image therefore needs approximately 2,400 × 3,000 pixels before accounting for bleed, cropping, or a printer’s special requirements.
These figures are planning targets, not universal printer requirements. Ask the printing service for its preferred file dimensions, effective PPI, bleed, format, and color profile before creating the final output.

“300 DPI” is a common search phrase and print instruction, but PPI and DPI are technically different.
PPI describes how many pixels from the digital image are placed within each printed inch.
DPI describes the physical dots of ink or toner produced by a printer. A printer may use several dots to reproduce the color represented by one image pixel.
Changing an image’s metadata from 72 PPI to 300 PPI without resampling does not add pixels. It changes the calculated physical print size.
For example, a 1,800 × 1,200-pixel image contains the same number of pixels whether its metadata says 72 PPI or 300 PPI.
If you need that image to print at 12 × 8 inches at 300 PPI, it requires approximately 3,600 × 2,400 pixels. This is where an image upscaler may help.

Match the image to the print’s aspect ratio. An 8 × 10 print, for example, uses a different shape from a 4 × 6 photograph.
Preserve the uncropped master before creating the print crop.
Multiply the required print dimensions by the printer’s target PPI. Include additional dimensions for bleed where necessary.
If the source already contains enough pixels, AI upscaling may be unnecessary.
If the source is too small, determine the smallest practical enlargement.

Commercial printers may require the image to extend beyond the trim line.
For example, a design with 0.125-inch bleed on all sides adds 0.25 inch to both dimensions. An 8 × 10-inch trimmed page becomes an 8.25 × 10.25-inch document before converting the dimensions to pixels.
Ask the printer for the exact bleed specification.
Keep faces, text, logos, and important objects away from trim edges. Upscaling cannot correct a composition that places essential content outside the safe area.
