Upscayl Desktop is a free, open-source application for Windows, macOS, and Linux. It processes images on the local computer and can work without uploading the source image to a cloud service.
Step 1: Download the correct desktop version
Go to the Upscayl Desktop download page and select the version for your operating system:
Install the application using the instructions supplied with the download.
Upscayl uses Vulkan-based processing. Hardware compatibility and current graphics drivers can affect whether the desktop application runs successfully.
Step 2: Open your source image
Launch Upscayl and select the image you want to enlarge.
For the cleanest comparison:
Keep the original file unchanged.
Place the output in a separate folder.
Give the result a descriptive filename.
Record the source dimensions before processing.
Example:
- product-photo-original-1200x1200.jpg
After upscaling:
- product-photo-upscayl-4x-model-name.jpg
This makes later model comparisons easier.
Step 3: Choose an AI model
Select a model based on the image’s visual characteristics, not the most dramatic model name.
Start with:
A general or photography-oriented model for natural photos.
A digital-art model for anime, illustrations, or clean rendered graphics.
A sharper model only when the image needs stronger edge definition.
A custom model only after confirming that it is compatible and appropriate for the source.
Model names and availability may change between releases. The safest approach is to test the models currently displayed in your installed version.
Do not judge a model from the thumbnail alone. Process one representative image and inspect the output at 100%.
Step 4: Select the output size
Choose the smallest scale that meets your final requirement.
A 2× enlargement is often enough for:
- Website content
- Presentations
- Moderate cropping
- Smaller prints
A 4× enlargement may be useful for:
- Large display images
- Detailed artwork
- More substantial cropping
- Print files that need additional pixels
A larger output does not guarantee more accurate detail. Excessive enlargement can magnify artificial textures and produce unnecessarily heavy files.
Step 5: Choose an output folder
Save the upscaled result in a different folder from the source files.
A practical structure is:
/originals/
/upscaled-tests/
/approved-exports/
This protects the original, separates experiments, and makes the approved result easier to find.
Step 6: Run the upscale
Start the processing operation and allow it to finish.
Processing time depends on:
- Source dimensions
- Selected scale
- AI model
- Local GPU and system resources
- Number of images
- Additional processing options
Avoid running several demanding graphics applications at the same time if your computer has limited resources.
Step 7: Inspect the result at full size
Do not approve the image from a zoomed-out preview.
Compare the original and output at:
100% zoom
- The intended display size
- A close crop of the most important detail
Inspect faces, fine lines, hair, fabric, product edges, text, foliage, and high-contrast boundaries.
If the output looks overly smooth, brittle, painted, or artificially sharp, try another model or use a smaller scale.
